2006 Meeting Programs

September 7th Program Details
Featured Speaker: John Newell

John Newell, Funeral Director from Oxford, is to be the speaker for the September 7, 2006 meeting of the Granville County Genealogical Society 1746, Inc. He is planning to discuss some information about the Civil War, particularly the Lincoln assassination.

John was born in Warren County and graduated from John Graham High School before going to Hickory, NC where he was an apprentice at a funeral home and a student at Clemenger Business School. In 1963 he enrolled in the San Francisco School of Mortuary Science and in 1964 he came to Oxford where he joined Perkinson Currin Funeral Home. This firm later became known as Gentry Newell Vaughn Funeral Home and recently they have merged with Hall Wynn funeral Home in Durham.

John says that for over thirty years, he and his late wife Pat were “Civil War nuts”. They traveled extensively, tracking down battle sites and graves of those people involved in them, much like genealogists do in searching for their relatives. In recent years they were members of the Sureatt Society, which focuses on the assassination of Lincoln. The information which they have gotten through this society will be the basis for John’s presentation.

Please plan to attend this meeting at 6:30 PM on September 7, 2006 in the conference room at the Thornton Library on Main Street in Oxford. Members and guests should look forward to a most interesting and informative meeting
