“Civil War Records and Resources in the North Carolina Archives”

The Granville County Genealogical Society 1746, Inc. will hold its November meeting in the Richard H. Thornton Library Conference Room at 6:30 PM on November 1. 2007. The speaker for the evening will be LTC (Ret) Sion H. Harrington, III.

LTC Harrington served a total of thirty years in uniform, including more than 12 years on active duty, mostly in airborne units as a Paratrooper. Currently he serves as the Military Collection Archivist for the Archives and Records Section, Division of Historical Resources, North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources (a.k.a.) State Archives. His responsibilities include the collection and preservation of non-artifact materials (primarily photographs and papers) associated with military service of North Carolinians, as well as the collection of information pertaining to the military history of the state. Audio and video veteran interviews are a top priority.

A long time Elder of the Presbyterian Church, LTC Harrington is a graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill and holds master’s degrees from Webster University in St. Louis and NC State University. He is the married father of three grown daughters and has five grandchildren. Prior to serving on active duty in the United States Army, he was a high school history teacher and coach, and has taught on the junior high through university levels.

He has enjoyed a life-long love of history, particularly military history. Because of this he has been involved in various time periods of re-enacting living history, as well as serving on the boards of several historic and living history organizations.
