2010 Meeting Programs

February 4th Program Details
Featured Speaker: David Peace
Program Title: "The Four Phases" of African American Family Research

In keeping with the tradition of focusing on black families, heritage and culture during Black History Month, the Granville County Genealogical Society, 1746, Inc. is honored to have as it’s speaker for the February 4, 2010 meeting, Mr. David Peace from Greensboro, NC

Mr. Peace was born in Greensboro, NC.  When he was about 2 years old his mother died.  After his father remarried the family moved to Michigan, near Detroit.  When he became old enough, he joined the Navy and remained on active duty for 7 years.  Following his time in service, he returned to Greensboro, NC where he has lived since.  For the past 20 years he has been engaged in security and law enforcement work.

About 15 years ago, after his father died, he came to Granville County to investigate some land in the Sassafras Fork Township that his father had left to him.  His family had had a presence in Granville County since 1783.  At this point he became interested in genealogy and has been deeply involved since then.  After getting started with his research he soon realized there was a need to help Afican-Americans with their research, so he formed “AAFRO”, The Afican-American Family Research Organization.  He remains active with this organization and presently serves as President.

During his presentation, David plans to discuss “The Four Phases” of African-American Family Research which will include sources of information and organization of this information.

Please plan to join the Society at 6:30 PM at the Granville County Commissioner’s Meeting Room (next to the Sheriff’s Office) February 4, 2010 for what promises to be an interesting and informative program.  Visitors are always welcome and are cordially invited to attend this meeting.

The meetings of the Granville County Genealogical Society are open to the public. Non-members are always welcome.
