NCGS News Release

The North Carolina Genealogical Society will hold its Fall Workshop and Annual Meeting on Friday and Saturday, November 11 and 12, at the Brier Creek Country Club in Raleigh. Craig OR. Scott and William H. Brown are the featured speakers and will share their skills in this full two-day conference. The theme of this year’s meeting is Finding Your Military Ancestors. This topic is of high interest to genealogists and military researchers throughout the region. The program will include records of all wars of this nation but will emphasize the Revolutionary and Civil Wars.

The acclaimed speaker, Craig Scott, CGRS, is from Maryland, is a professional genealogist, has edited several genealogical newsletters, and is CEO of Heritage Books, Inc. The bookstore division of this corporation, Willow Bend Books, is the largest online genealogy bookstore in the world. William “Bill” Brown is a well know archivist with the State of North Carolina. He has served for more than 10 years with the Department of Cultural Resources where he has focused on the Military records located in the State Archives at Raleigh. Bill is currently employed as Governor’s Papers Editor with the Historical Publications Section, NC Office of Archives and History.

Elliott Futrell of Goldsboro, President of NCGS, will moderate the Annual Meeting. Futrell comments, “This year’s meeting with Craig Scott and Bill Brown will unlock many paths for new study and promises to be of keen interest to both the novice and experienced military historian.” Ann Hilke of Raleigh, Program Chairman, adds, “This workshop is exciting for it brings Scott and Brown together to share their Military knowledge. Their distinctive approaches to finding military ancestors are both entertaining as well as informative.”

Guests and NCGS members are cordially invited to attend the Workshop and Annual Meeting to hear these speakers. Other highlights of the conference are the Society’s Annual Meeting, presentation of awards by NCGS, and shopping with vendors.
