2007 Meeting Programs

April 5th Program Details
Featured Speaker: Mrs. Pam Thornton

The Granville County Genealogical Society 1746 Inc., at its April 5, 2007 meeting will have the opportunity to hear about the recently opened Granville County Historical Society’s Museum from Pam Thornton, who is the museum’s director.

Pam grew up in Winston Salem, NC and attended Wingate Junior College. After she had been married for several years, she and her husband, who were both interested in antiques, decided to sell their home in Winston Salem, buy a motor home and go into the antique business full time. They stayed on the road traveling all over the country dealing in antique shows and sales.

About 30 years ago they settled in Wake Forest and restored an old home there; then when they had that about finished, about 20 years ago, they heard about a house in Granville County that was for sale and as soon as they saw Oak Lawn, near Horner Siding, they very shortly thereafter bought it and began to restore it.

She has been associated with the Granville County Historical Society for many years and in 1992 she was president of the organization. In 1996 the Old Jail Museum was opened for the 250th year celebration of the founding of the county. In 1998 she became interim director of the museum until the Harris Hall was finished and she became the full time director. In the past several months, the new museum has opened in the old jail building and now there is a permanent display there concentrating on Granville County history and a changing display on various subjects in the Harris Hall.

Please plan to attend this meeting, which promises to be both interesting and informative. The meeting will be held in the conference room at the Thornton Library on Main Street in Oxford at 6:30 PM, April 5, 2007.
