2008 Meeting Programs April 3rd Program DetailsFeatured Speaker: Mr. Tom Magnuson Program Title: “Ground Transportation in the Southeast’s Colonial Era” The Granville County Genealogical Society 1746, Inc. will hold its regular monthly meeting in the Conference Room at the Richard H. Thornton Library on Main Street in Oxford at 6:30 PM on April 3, 2008 with Tom Magnuson as the featured speaker. Tom Magnuson is the founder and CEO of the Trading Path Association (TPA), a non-profit organization committed to finding and protecting from accidental destruction remnants of the travel routes of the colonial southeast. Prior to founding the TPA, Magnuson enjoyed an unconventional high tech career first in the integrated circuit industry and government service and later in the software business. By education a military historian (M.A., San Jose State College), Magnuson stumbled on the importance of the old roads and the TPA’s methods of finding them while studying military geophysics. His presentation will be a general discussion of transportation technologies and methods of ground transportation in the southeast's colonial era. In this period commerce traveled on the backs of porters, beasts of burden and in wagons. Also in this period, the first ferries appeared in America, and bridging began on a small scale. Each of these technologies fundamentally impacted the locations of people and towns, and in a way they all determined why we are where we are. The presentation will introduce these technologies and describe some of their impacts. Members and guests are urged to plan on taking in this program at Thornton Library on the first Thursday night in April as it promises to be a real treat. The meeting, to be held in the Thornton Library Conference Room, will begin at 6:30 P.M. on April 3, 2008. The meeting is open to the public. Questions or comments send to: GCGS.office@gmail.com |
