Featured Speaker: Allen Dew
Program Title: "Cemeteries: Getting the Picture"

The Granville County Genealogical Society 1746 Inc., at its January 7, 2010 meeting will have as its speaker Allen Dew, owner of the Cemetery Census web site, member and webmaster of the GCGS.

Allen is a native of Rocky Mount NC, and graduate of North Carolina Wesleyan College. After college, Allen married Neva Ann Daniel from the Wilton Community in Granville County. Having lived in Durham for about 30 years, Allen and Neva now live in Granville County on the farm where Neva grew up. They have two children.

Allen started working on cemetery surveys in 1995 and made the Orange County and Durham County cemetery surveys available on computers at each county Library. A few years later the cemetery records were made available on the Internet. The cemetery records have expanded to include Granville, Chatham, Caswell, Alamance, Wake, Surry and about 30 counties in total. The web address is: http://cemeterycensus.com

Our speaker will discuss some of the best methods for photographing complete cemeteries and gravemarkers. Which cameras are best for this job. Getting permission to do a cemetery survey. What items do you need to bring along? What is the best time of day to photograph? How to frame the shots. Choosing proper resolutions. When to rotate and not to rotate. Always keep the originals. This promises to be a good discusion to help everyone get the pictures.

The meetings of the Granville County Genealogical Society are open to the public. Please join us in the County Commissioner's Meeting Room at 6:30 PM on January 7, 2010 for this special presentation. Non-members are always welcome.
