2010 Meeting Programs

June 3rd Program Details
Featured Speaker: Dot Wilkinson
Program Title: "How Tragedy Affects Family Members"

The May meeting of the Granville County Genealogical Society 1746 will be held on June 3, 2010 at the County Commissioner’s Meeting Room with Charter Member of the Society, Dorothy Gupton Wilkinson as the featured speaker.  Dot was born in Franklin County where she grew up on a farm.  After attending local schools, she continued her education at Louisburg College and East Carolina Teacher’s College (now ECU), where she graduated with double majors in Home Economics and Science.  Fresh out of school, she was hired as the Home Economics teacher at Oak Hill School in Granville County, where she also had full responsibility for the management of the lunchroom.  After two years, she next worked for one year as Assistant Home Demonstration Agent for Granville County with the title of Emergency War Food Preservation Assistant.  In 1945 she was promoted Home Demonstration Agent.  She furthered her education while working at this job, earning her Master’s Degree in Adult Education from North Carolina State University in 1971.  When she retired in 1977, she had served as a Home Demonstration Agent for 33 years.  Since her retirement, she has spent much of her time with her family and considerable time working on genealogy.

She was married to the late G. P. Wilkinson and has one son, David, and a granddaughter and a grandson.

Three months ago, there was a series of articles in the Oxford Public Ledger concerning the murder of County Commissioner W. P. Wilkinson by Mr. Milton Hobgood, both of whom were residents of Granville County. In her presentation Dot will tell us “The Rest of the Story”, focusing on how this tragedy affected the members of both families associated with this event.

Meetings of the Granville County Genealogical Society are open to the public and visitors are welcome and encouraged to attend. The meeting will begin at 6:30 P.M. June 3, 2010 at the County Commissioner’s Meeting Room on Williamsboro Street (across the street from Sunrise Biscuits).

The meetings of the Granville County Genealogical Society are open to the public. Non-members are always welcome.
