2011 Meeting Programs

April 7th Program Details
Featured Speaker: Sarah E. Koonts.
Program Title: "Preserving Your Family Papers"

The Granville County Genealogical Society will meet on April 7, 2011 at 6:30 P.M. in the large conference room at the Richard H. Thornton Library on Main Street in Oxford, N.C. A very special program will be presented during the meeting, entitled "Preserving Your Family Papers" given by Mrs. Sarah E. Koonts from Raleigh. Mrs. Koonts has, for over nine years, been the head of the Collections Management Branch of the North Carolina State Archives, where she oversees all the collections care activities for the Archives , including disaster preparedness, conservation, preservation and imaging of public records for permanent preservation. Before coming to the branch she worked in reference, non-textual collections and local government records management for the Archives. In the past year she has been directing a joint effort by the Archives, the Office of State InformationTechnology and the Division of Emergency Management to train state and local government records keepers on the identification and protection of essential records as part of their continuity of operations plans. She has worked at the Archives since 1993. She has a B.A. in history from Simpson College in Indianola, IA and a M.A. in Public History from North Carolina State University.

During her presentation, Mrs. Koonts plans to discuss a little bit about the make up of historical papers and books (and a little about photographs), discuss why and how they deteriorate, and discuss steps that can be taken to preserve them.

Meetings of the society are open and visitors are always encouraged to join the members for this informative presentation at 6:30 P.M. April 7, 2011 in the conference room at Richard H. Thornton Library.

All GCGS meetings are open to the public and guests are cordially invited to attend.
