2011 Meeting Programs August 4thd Program DetailsFeatured Speaker: John W. Clauser, Jr. The Granville County Genealogical Society will begin it’s 2011 - 2012 season of programs on August 4, 2011 at the Richard H. Thornton Library with John W. Clauser, Jr. as the featured speaker. The topic of his presentation is “The Southern Folk Cemetery” Mr. Clauser was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania and after finishing High School he did a tour of duty in the Navy. Following discharge from the Navy, he earned an AB degree in anthropology from Syracuse University and later a MA degree in anthropology (emphasis: archeology) from the University of Florida in Gainsville, Florida. Beginning in 1976 he worked as an Archeologist with the Office of State Archeology, State Historic Preservation Office, Division of Archives and History, Division of Archives and History, Department of Cultural Resources, State of North Carolina. Between 1984 and 2003 he recorded over 50 Family Cemeteries throughout North Carolina. This included surveying the cemetery, locating and mapping marked and unmarked graves, recording marker inscriptions, making recommendations for the marking of the cemetery and preparing a final report which are on file at the Office of State Archeology in Raleigh. He also worked on nunerous other archeological projects and published many papers on this subject, In 2003, he retired from his state position and formed his own company called Of Grave Concerns, Inc which is a private consulting firm specializing in cemetery recording and preservation. The company has been involved in numerous cemetery projects involving recording, moving, evaluation of development plans and restoration. Services also include machinery operation for archeologists. As always, the meetings of the Granville County Genealogical Society are open and visitors, as well as members, are cordially invited to attend this meeting at 6:30 PM in the conference room at the Richard H Thornton Library in Oxford on August 4, 2011. All GCGS meetings are open to the public and guests are cordially invited to attend.
