2011 Meeting Programs September 1st Program DetailsFeatured Speaker: Mr. Eddie McCoy and Ms. Sallyann Hobson On Thursday, September 1, 2011 the Granville County Genealogical Society will have a program presented by two long-time genealogical researchers who are planning a community wide project. Ms. Sallyann Hobson is nearing the implementation stage of the Big Zion A.M.E.Z. Church Cemetery Project that has the goal of restoring and documenting one of the oldest African American church cemeteries in Granville County. With contributing expertise from the GCGS, she wants to encourage and teach others to document their church cemeteries. During the early planning stages, the question arose of what is the oldest African American church in Granville County. For some time, Mr. McCoy has worked to research county African American church histories and so the 2 projects were joined. The search has begun to identify the oldest African American churches for each denomination in the county. The September presentation focuses on the techniques, steps and possible references for researching African American church histories in Granville County. Hopefully the histories of all churches in Granville County can be documented and their cemeteries restored when necessary. A treasure trove of information for researchers nationwide would eventually be available. Sallyann and Eddie are very excited about this project and are eager to get it underway, please join them and the other members of the society at 6:30 PM September 1, 2011 in the conference room at Richard H. Thornton Library on Main Street in Oxford. The society meetings are open meetings and visitors are cordially invited to attend. All GCGS meetings are open to the public and guests are cordially invited to attend.
