2011 Meeting Programs October 6th Program DetailsFeatured Speaker: Mr. Leonard Dean Leonard Dean, a charter member of the Granville County Genealogical Society, will present the program for the October 6, 2011 meeting of the society. He will discuss his forthcoming book, Granville County, NC Gazetteer. Leonard, who is a Granville County native, has done considerable research concerning this county. In doing this research, he often found William S. Powell's book The North Carolina Gazetteer to be very helpful, but at times not as informative as he had hoped. He then began work on a gazetteer that focused on Granville County and supplemented Powell's book. Over quite a few years he has used a variety of sources, including old maps, documents and books to identify and define a large number of communities, towns, streams, old homesteads and roads. These landmarks will provide much assistance in establishing the general area where a person of yesteryear lived. He adds that the exact location of where an individual lived will be a job for the individual researcher to determine. There has been a preliminary copy of his work in the North Carolina Room at Richard H. Thornton Library for several years while Leonard continued to work on his final copy. This preliminary copy has become dog-eared form extensive use, indicating the popularity and usefulness of this information. During the program, Dean will discuss the book, which he says is about as complete as he feels he can do. Please plan to join with other society members and guests on October 6, 2011 at 6:30 PM in the large conference room at Richard H. Thornton Library on Main Street in Oxford to hear about this fascinating and important work. This is an open meeting and guests are cordially invited to attend. All GCGS meetings are open to the public and guests are cordially invited to attend.
