2013 Meeting Programs June 6th Program Details Leonard Dean will be the featured speaker for the monthly Granville County Genealogical Society meeting on June 6 at 6:30 p.m. in the large meeting room of the Richard H. Thornton Library in Oxford. Dean, a longtime GCGS member, will speak on "Computers and Genealogy". Today many genealogists use computers in their family research. This program will be a survey of how computers are used in expanding family trees. Such topics as finding obituaries online and generalized internet searches for family members will be explored. An overview/demonstration will be presented of the use of a genealogy program. Such programs become the foundation for collecting information, storing the information you have collected, publishing your findings, and pointing the way to new discoveries. Examples will be shown of how a commercial product, Ancestry.com, can be used as an aid for family historians. A demonstration will be presented on using official online county websites to continue your discovery. The program will conclude with an overview of Cyndi's List which is used as a resource website for genealogists. The meetings of the society are open to the public. Guests are cordially invited to join with the society members to hear this presentation, to be given at 6:30 P.M. on May 2, 2013 in the large conference room at R. H. Thornton Library in Oxford.
